A drawn conversation with Sao Sopheak, a documentary filmmaker and Creative Director of Meta House in Phnom Penh.
Sopheak has produced and directed a number of documentaries. In February 2013, she became the first Cambodian filmmaker to be invited to the Berlin International Film Festival (‘Berlinale Panorama’) in Germany. Her film Two Girls Against the Rain, which portrays the life of a lesbian couple during the Khmer Rouge period, was awarded ‘Best Documentary Short’ at the KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival in India.
In her artistic work, Sao Sopheak critically examines issues of gender equality. She seeks to encourage all Khmer women not to be afraid to pursue their dreams, to be themselves, and to build their own independent networks within society.
